Policing in Carleton North and Hartland

Earlier this year, the District of Carleton North and the Town of Hartland agreed to work together to determine if a new local policing service could be established to serve both communities.

The Policing proposal was been submitted to the Province of New Brunswick Department of Justice and Public Safety for assessment November, 2023.

IMPORTANT NOTICE ON POLICING

Minister Kris Austin of the Department of Justice and Public Safety approved the municipalities to move forward with this effort by forming a Police Review Committee that would be tasked to purpose an alternative service. Mayor Harvey of District of Carleton North and Mayor Demerchant of Town of Hartland are active members of the committee, as well as other councillors and administration from both municipalities.

The Police Review Committee is chaired by retired policing veteran John de Winter. Chairperson de Winter is a former Staff Sergeant and Commanding Officer who has worked in municipal services and the RCMP.  Jason Hickey, a retired veteran of the Waterloo, Ontario police service who grew up in Carleton North, is also a committee member.

In November 2023 the committee plans to submit a full and detailed proposal for an alternative service to the province in care of Minister Austin.  In addition, the committee plans to conduct a public campaign to inform residents about the committee's activities and to obtain their feedback on policing.

As part of the campaign, the committee has created a website to share information and will host open houses to listen to your concerns and answer your questions, with dates, times, and venues to be announced later this month.

The committee has also created a survey for you to complete and submit.  The committee will compile the results of the survey and share those results with the public.  The results will also be presented by the Mayors of both municipalities to Council, posted on the websites of both municipalities, and submitted to the Province in care of Minister Austin.

To take the survey, you can fill in the survey form in paper and drop it off at the town hall of District of Carleton North, 19 Station Road, Florenceville-Bristol or Town of Hartland, 31 Orser Street Hartland.  Alternatively, you can complete the survey online HERE. - CLOSED TO SUBMISSIONS

The relationship between policing and the mayor or a municipality is significant and complex.

Mayors may work with the police department to develop and implement law enforcement policies and procedures.  Mayors can serve as a bridge between the police department and the community.
